I love long walks on the beach at sunset. (Can't go wrong with a story that starts with that line, eh?) Joking aside the beach has always been my 'go to' escape. This girl from Alabama has been beyond my wildest dreams lucky enough to see shores all over the world in 12 countries and 10 of the Caribbean Islands.
And it is my beach loving humble opinion that the Florida Keys give any beach destination a run for its money. Within a 100 mile stretch you have gorgeous beaches; world class fishing; live music venues; any water sport you can think of; private islands; seaplane excursions; top resorts & spas; restaurants that were doing farm/sea-to-table long before it was cool; and let's top off the list with awe inspiring sunsets.
I just got back from a fabulous 10 day road trip in the Florida Keys. On this trip I stayed in five luxury hotels and here's the scoop.
* * *
Hotels I stayed in on this trip (in order from North to South):
🏖 Playa Largo Resort & Spa - Key Largo
🐠 Amara Cay Resort - Islamorada
🦅 Hawks Cay - Duck Key
🌅 Sunset Key Cottages - Key West
😇 The Saint Hotel - Key West
All of the properties have the basic stuff you'd expect from a luxury hotel: comfy bed, elegant linens, feather pillows, room service, quality bathroom amenities etc.
Detailed descriptions and photos are below. A quick reference sheet with what my favorites and least favorite bits and tips for each property is here.
The rooms at Play Largo are spacious and comfortable. One of the amenities on the "resort pantry menu" (a/k/a mini bar menu) is a Tommy Bahama sun hat ($35). You can see it in the photo below. I thought that was super cool. (Of course, I tried the hat on but much unlike myself didn't take a selfie in it. What! And, I didn't buy it because who knows how many folks have tried that hat on. Right?😳 )
There's a tablet that you can use for making reservations, checking out what's nearby and such. Water bottles are provided for use during your stay and there are several hydration stations around the property for refilling with water - still or sparkling. Sparkling water was a little unexpected treat. (The photo next to the water bottles is a hydration station.)
The pool and beach areas at Playa Largo are impressive. Pool is large with lots of loungers, cabanas, towel stand is well equipped and of course, you have the view of the beach & ocean from the pool. There are steps into the ocean that it made it easy to have even more fun in the sun. And look at that sunset!
(Personally, I wasn't wowed with the poolside service or the pool bar for that matter but I think they are still working out kinks and it wasn't bad enough to make me not want to go back. )
Amara Cay In Islamorada
My room was very large and had a wonderful view. Every room has a patio/balcony which is nice. Of the places I stayed on this trip - the bedroom at Amara Cay was my favorite. Everything about it is no fuss clean lines and very tranquil. Having an amazing view of the palm trees and water just added to this mood.
The grounds of Amara Cay are also comfortable with various seating areas set up to make it easy to enjoy the natural beauty.
Hawks Cay In Duck Key
My room at Hawks Cay was large if not a bit outdated. (It was the only place I stayed with no USB outlet.) There was a great deck that was right on the path to the pool so that was nice. I wish I'd had more than one night to really get to know Hawks Cay so I need to go back!
Sunset Key Cottages, Key West
The Saint Hotel In Key West
Goodness gracious, I hope you get to go to the beautiful Florida Keys! If you are planning a trip and want help with an itinerary or have any questions I might can help with just leave a comment below or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
